Residents asked to not have garden fires following prolonged dry weather
While recent rainfall has been welcome, vegetation and garden waste can remain very dry. This means fires can spread quickly and unexpectedly, even after rain.
A small garden fire can easily spread to neighbouring gardens, property, vegetation and nearby open spaces, particularly where the ground and surrounding materials have dried out over a prolonged period.
Residents clearing garden waste are encouraged to use safer alternatives, including:
- Composting garden waste at home
- Taking garden waste to a local household waste recycling centre
- Using the Council’s garden waste collection service
Recent fires across the country have demonstrated how quickly fires can take hold following periods of warm, dry weather.
Residents are therefore asked not to light garden fires at this time and to take extra care when spending time outdoors.
By taking these precautions, you can help reduce the risk of accidental fires and protect homes, communities and local open spaces.
