Update on Local Government Reorganisation in Derbyshire
The Government has today announced its decision on Local Government Reorganisation in Derbyshire.
From April 2028 we will be working as part of a unitary Council, which will bring together Council teams from South Derbyshire, Derby City, Derbyshire, Erewash and the southern side of Amber Valley (Option B1 in the One Derbyshire, Two Councils proposal).
There are no immediate changes to council services, and residents should continue to access services in the usual way.
Our priority remains delivering high-quality services while working positively and in collaboration with all Derbyshire councils to ensure the transition is well planned, well managed and delivers the best possible outcomes for our residents and communities.
Cllr Robert Pearson, Leader of South Derbyshire District Council, said:
“This is a significant day in the context of local Government in Derbyshire, and something we have been preparing ourselves for over the past 18 months.
“It has been an uncertain time for us all since we first heard the announcement about Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) in December 2024. I would firstly like to thank all Council employees and fellow Members for their continued professionalism and commitment during this period.
“Now we have clarity, the process will begin in the background to prepare us for Shadow Elections to the new authority in May 2027, and ultimately the start of the new unitary council in April 2028. In the meantime, our focus will not waiver on delivering quality services to shape our environment, drive our economy and support our communities across South Derbyshire.”
What happens next?
Today's announcement marks the beginning of the next stage of the Local Government Reorganisation programme.
This stage provides an opportunity to shape future local government arrangements that will continue to deliver high-quality, sustainable services for the people and communities we serve.
We would like to thank everyone who took the time to participate in the Local Government Reorganisation consultations and share their views throughout the process.
Further information, including frequently asked questions, the programme timetable and future updates, will be published on our website as they become available.
