Plans for brand new Swadlincote Leisure Centre approved
Plans for a major new leisure and office development in Swadlincote have been approved by South Derbyshire District Council’s Development Management Committee (2 June 2026).
The proposed development, located off William Nadin Way, will deliver a modern new leisure centre and office space, replacing the existing Green Bank Leisure Centre and supporting the wider regeneration of Swadlincote town centre.*
This new facility will include a six-court sports hall, swimming facilities, gym, fitness studios, café and flexible community spaces, alongside new office accommodation for the Council.
And following extensive public consultation, the plans are now set to deliver even more for local residents and sports clubs.
After engaging with residents, community organisations and local sports clubs, alongside discussions with Sport England and other sporting bodies, the Council revisited the original sports hall proposals to explore whether the facility could go further in supporting future demand.
As a result, the proposed sports hall has been significantly expanded from the original concept design, creating a larger, future-proofed facility, capable of supporting a wider range of sporting activity, training and events for both local clubs and the wider region.

Councillor Robert Pearson, Leader of South Derbyshire District Council, said:
“This is a hugely exciting milestone for the project and for South Derbyshire. These proposals will deliver modern, high-quality leisure and community facilities that residents can be proud of for generations to come.
“What is especially positive is that the scheme has continued to evolve through meaningful engagement with local people, sports clubs and community groups. The decision to increase the size of the sports hall demonstrates that we have listened carefully to the feedback we received and responded positively to it.
“This development represents a major investment in health, wellbeing, sport and the future of Swadlincote.”
The revised design has been developed by the Council’s appointed architects, CPMG Architects, and wider consultant team, who identified a way to increase the size of the sports hall whilst retaining the wider facility mix and remaining within the project’s approved budget.
Alessio Granata, senior architect at CPMG, said:
“The plans for Swadlincote Leisure Centre showcase a futureproofed design, one that will support the local community for years to come. Working alongside the council and our project partners, we’re now in a position where we will soon begin to see our design come to life - which is incredibly exciting.”
Enabling works are now expected to commence in summer 2026, with the new facility anticipated to open in spring 2028.
