Findern resident's heartfelt Remembrance display honours those who served
For the past five or six years, Terry Evans has been creating impressive Remembrance displays outside his home in Findern. What started as a small display featuring camouflage netting and the painted bases of bottles designed to resemble poppies has grown into an increasingly elaborate tribute, with something new being added each year.
The display may have become a well-known feature in the community, but it is entirely Terry's creation. Each year he designs, builds and assembles the display himself, continually adding new features and ideas. His brother has helped create some individual pieces, including the rifles, but the project is driven by Terry's dedication and commitment.
As an ex-serviceman, Terry's displays are particularly meaningful to him. Having lost friends during his time in the forces, he sees the tribute as a way of honouring their memory. The collection of flags included in the display also belongs to Terry and reflects his strong connection to the armed forces.
Creating the display is a labour of love and requires a significant amount of time and effort. Recent storms presented a challenge, with Terry having to battle the elements to keep everything intact. He joked that his bungalow had become "like a boarding house" while the various figures waited to be assembled and put in place.
One of the most time-consuming pieces to create was the figure with its head bowed. The figure had to be cut down, modified and built out to achieve the desired look. Every finger and joint is fully movable, adding to the realism and craftsmanship of the piece.
Despite the hard work involved, Terry takes great pleasure in creating the displays and seeing the enjoyment they bring to others.
His efforts were spotted by Becky, one of our Careline Support Coordinators, who was so impressed by the display while out on her rounds that she took the time to speak with Terry and learn more about the story behind it.
With this year's tribute now complete, Terry is already beginning to think about what he might create for next year.
A huge thank you to Terry for his dedication and for creating such a meaningful tribute to those who have served.
