Ten more energy efficient homes ready for South Derbyshire residents
TEN brand new energy efficient homes were handed over this week to South Derbyshire District Council, to let to applicants on the district’s housing register
The new homes have been delivered in partnership with the developer, Bloor Homes, and the Council's Strategic Housing team, alongside project management experts, Pick Everard.
The homes sit on Cromwell Orchard, part of a family housing development at New House Farm in Mickleover. Located on Ladybrook Place, these one-bedroom energy-efficient apartments are close to lots of local amenities, transport links and large employers; ideally positioned for tenants looking for a secure, warm and modern home.
All ten properties have been built to traditional construction methods, with Solar PV Panels, to help reduce electricity bills by generating renewable energy throughout the day. Highly insulated with gas central heating, the properties will be comfortable, thermally efficient and built to last.
These new affordable homes, offered at social rent levels, will provide much-needed housing for local people who would otherwise be unable to access suitable accommodation on the open market, helping to reduce housing inequality. They will be let through the Council’s allocation system to those people on the housing register with a housing need.
The completion of these properties comes on the back of four other brand new one-bedroom apartments being handed over last month on an adjacent development.
Councillor Mick Mulgrew, Vice Chair of the Housing and Community Services Committee at South Derbyshire District Council, said:
“This is my second visit to this development with our Strategic Housing Team in the past few weeks to view brand new homes for those in need on our housing register. I’m very proud to say that, as it shows the dedication the team has given to delivering on our strategy to provide more quality, affordable homes each year across South Derbyshire.
“Every one of the properties I have seen have been built to a great standard and will be ideal for individuals or couples looking for somewhere to call home."
The Government’s Future Homes Standard, which comes into force in March 2027, means that all newly built homes must benefit from carbon reduction measures and technology that not only helps the environment, but help reduce the overall cost of living through energy bill savings. This aligns with the Council’s priority to tackle fuel poverty and deliver more affordable homes year-on-year.
Jon Nicholls, Site Manager for Bloor Homes, said:
"Reaching this milestone is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved in the project. Through close collaboration with South Derbyshire District Council, we've created a collection of high-quality, sustainable homes designed to meet the needs of modern living. Knowing these properties will provide secure, affordable homes for local people makes this development particularly meaningful"
Daniel Owen, Principal Building Surveyor from Pick Everard said:
“As Clerk of Works, appointed to represent our client, South Derbyshire District Council, throughout the construction process, I have been consistently impressed by the quality of the homes delivered by Bloor Homes.
“The strong collaborative approach between the developer and the Council has resulted in the successful delivery of attractive and energy-efficient homes that will help meet current demand for affordable housing and provide much needed accommodation for households on the Council’s waiting list. These homes will make a lasting difference to local residents and the wider community”
