Local Government Reorganisation: Latest Update

Melbourne Market Place Melbourne Market Place

Today (Thursday 29 October 2026), the Government confirmed that, although they remain committed to the LGR  programme, their original decision to create two unitary authorities in Derbyshire has now been withdrawn. This does not mean that reorganisation has been cancelled, but that all options and proposals will be reconsidered as part of a wider review.

Local elections, including those in South Derbyshire will go ahead in May 2027 on existing council boundaries. Government remains confident that new councils are expected to be established for April 2029, with elections to shadow councils taking place in May 2028.

In practical terms, this means we are now in a holding position while Government considers the proposals again. A new decision will need to be made, and we expect the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) to provide a further update in early 2027.
