Nominations open for South Derbyshire's Unsung Hero 2026

The annual contest celebrates the individuals and groups who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make South Derbyshire a better place to live, often without seeking recognition or reward.

Whether it's a neighbour who is always willing to lend a helping hand, a volunteer who dedicates their time to supporting others, or a community group making a positive difference, the Council wants to hear their stories.

Nominations are now open and will close at 11.59pm on Friday 6 November 2026.

The winner will receive a special trophy and have the honour of switching on South Derbyshire's Christmas lights at the annual Christmas Lights Switch-On event in Swadlincote town centre on Saturday 28 November 2026.

Who can be nominated?

The contest is open to individuals and groups of all ages who live within the South Derbyshire district.

Anyone aged 18 or over can submit a nomination, although employees of South Derbyshire District Council and their immediate family members are not eligible to be nominated.

Nominating someone is simple. Residents just need to complete a short online form explaining, in up to 500 words, why their chosen individual or group deserves to be recognised.

Nominations should include examples of the positive impact the nominee has made on people, places or communities across South Derbyshire.

How will the winner be chosen?

Once nominations close, an internal judging panel will review the entries and draw up a shortlist. A second panel will then select five finalists, who will be announced on Tuesday 10 November 2026.

The public will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite finalist between 10 and 20 November, with the winner announced on Tuesday 24 November 2026.

The winning Unsung Hero will then take centre stage at The Lights Before Christmas event on Saturday 28 November, helping to bring festive cheer to Swadlincote by switching on the town's Christmas lights.
