Licensing Freedom of Information

Freedom of Information Requests – Taxi Licensing Data

South Derbyshire District Council receives a high volume of Freedom of Information (FOI) requests seeking details about licensed taxi drivers, vehicles, and operators.

To improve transparency and efficiency, we now routinely publish a dataset containing non-personal information about currently licensed vehicles. This includes:

  • Vehicle make and model
  • Licence issue number
  • Licence expiry date

You can access the published data here:

Personal data and data protection

Please note that requests for personal information, such as the names or contact details of licensed drivers or operators, will not be disclosed under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. This information is protected under section 40(2) of the Act, as it constitutes personal data and its disclosure would breach the principles of the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018.

Even where names are not directly requested, the council must consider whether information (such as vehicle registration number or date of MOT) could relate to information that indirectly identify a living individual when combined with other available data. Where a risk of indirect identification exists, the information will also be withheld.

In addition, some information, such as MOT status or vehicle registration details, may be available through other sources including the DVLA’s vehicle enquiry service at https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/. Under section 21 of the FOI Act, we are not required to provide information that is already reasonably accessible by other means.
