Weed spraying and control
We carry out regular weed control across South Derbyshire to help keep our roads, footpaths and public spaces safe, accessible and well maintained.
Why do we spray weeds?
Weed control is an essential part of maintaining public spaces. If left unmanaged, weeds can damage footpaths, obstruct access and create hazards for pedestrians.
Our routine weed control programme includes:
- Footpaths and roadside channels - treated twice a year to help manage weed growth.
- Grassed areas - an annual programme targeting weeds around trees, obstacles and street furniture.
- Selected fence and tree lines - treated where vegetation affects access or maintenance.
Not all areas are sprayed. Where vegetation is not causing an obstruction, we generally allow it to grow naturally.
What weedkiller do we use?
We use Roundup weedkiller, which contains glyphosate, a commonly used herbicide designed to control unwanted vegetation.
Glyphosate-based products are regulated in the UK, and their use is subject to safety requirements set by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Our grounds maintenance teams are trained in the safe application of weedkillers and follow product instructions, risk assessments and relevant health and safety procedures.
Is weed spraying safe for people and pets?
When approved weedkillers are used correctly, the risks to people and animals are minimised.
However, we understand that residents may be concerned, particularly when walking dogs or spending time outdoors.
As a precaution, we ask residents to:
- Avoid areas while our crews are actively spraying.
- Keep children and pets away from freshly treated vegetation until the spray has dried.
- Prevent pets from licking or eating recently treated plants.
- Follow any advice provided by our grounds maintenance teams.
The weedkiller dries relatively quickly, depending on weather conditions, and the risk of exposure is significantly reduced once dry.
These simple precautions help keep everyone safe while our teams carry out their work.
