Electoral Registration

You can only vote in elections if your name is on the electoral register. Not being registered can also make it harder to obtain credit.

If you’re not registered to vote at your current address e.g. you’ve recently moved or have just turned 18, you can register online by visiting www.gov.uk/registertovote. It only takes five minutes. You will need your National Insurance (NI) number and date of birth.

Alternatively, scan the QR code below to start an online application.

All voters need to register individually, rather than as a household

Inspection of the Electoral Register

The full electoral register is available for public inspection, by appointment, at Civic Offices, Civic Way, Swadlincote, DE11 0AH

Appointments to view the full register must be made by calling 01283 595875 / 595728 / 595723

The appointment (maximum 30 minutes) will be supervised by a member of the Electoral Services Team to ensure that the person inspecting the register does not take copies or photographic images of the register. Hand-written notes are permissible.

Information obtained from an inspection of the full electoral register must not be used for marketing purposes.

The edited register, sometimes referred to as the 'open' version of the electoral register is also available for inspection at Civic Offices, Civic Way, Swadlincote, DE11 0AH during normal working hours - no appointment is necessary - just ask reception. Copies of the edited register can also be purchased by any individual or organisation and used for marketing or other commercial purposes.

It is worth noting that approximately 65% of the electorate in South Derbyshire is currently opted-out of the edited register.

Electors may opt-out of being listed on the edited register by writing to the Electoral Registration Officer or by emailing elections@southderbyshire.gov.uk

Objections to an entry on the Electoral Register

Any elector registered in South Derbyshire may make an objection at any time to a person’s registration, either before or after that person has been added to the register. Objections can be made to both applications for registration and to entries already on the register.

A list of applications that are awaiting determination by the Electoral Registration Officer is available and may be viewed during normal business hours at Civic Offices, Civic Way, Swadlincote, DE11 0AH

The grounds for objection are either:

  • that the person does not meet one or all of the requirements for registration, namely the age, nationality and residence qualifications
  • that the person has a legal disqualification to registering

Objections must be made in writing. South Derbyshire District council recommends the use of the following downloadable form to ensure the relevant information is captured:
