How to Vote
At a polling station
Polling stations are open from 7am to 10pm on election day. To vote, you must bring photo ID. You can find your designated polling station by checking your poll card or visiting Where do I vote?
We will send you a poll card before an election telling you where and when to vote. If you haven’t received a poll card but think you should, contact our Elections Team.
Give your name and address to the staff inside the polling station when you arrive. You don’t have to take your poll card. You'll be given a ballot paper.
Filling in your ballot paper:
- Take your ballot paper into a polling booth.
- Follow the instructions on the notices in the polling booth and on the top of the ballot paper to vote.
- When completed put the ballot paper in the ballot box.
By post
Voting by post is easy and convenient. You can apply online. Once you receive your postal vote, return it as soon as possible. It must arrive by 10pm on election day to be counted.
By proxy (someone voting on your behalf)
Voting by proxy allows someone else to vote on your behalf. Your chosen proxy must be eligible to vote in UK elections and will need to show their own photo ID at the polling station.
For more information, please visit our postal and proxy voting page.
Finding your candidates
You can find information about candidates standing for election in your area on the Statement of Persons Nominated, which is published on our website before each election.
Candidates may also distribute their own election materials. Additionally, you can check Who can I vote for? for further details.
