South Derbyshire District Council is looking for a Waste Education Officer to lead our district-wide behavioural change, education, and community outreach work. 

You’ll be at the frontline of improving recycling, reducing contamination, and helping residents and businesses understand how to manage their waste responsibly. This is a hands-on role working directly with schools, households, local businesses and frontline waste crews to deliver a cleaner, greener South Derbyshire. 

What you'll do: 

  • Deliver engaging educational sessions and community events promoting recycling, waste reduction and environmental awareness.
  • Work closely with refuse and recycling teams to identify issues, support operational changes and increase participation.
  • Visit residents, schools and businesses to resolve waste presentation issues and drive behaviour change.
  • Lead targeted campaigns to tackle contamination hotspots and improve recycling performance.
  • Support the roll-out of new waste initiatives, ensuring clear communication and strong community engagement.
  • Produce high-quality promotional materials, online content and data-driven reports to support service improvement. 

What we’re looking for: 

  • Someone confident, proactive and able to communicate clearly with people of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Experience in community engagement, education, outreach, or environmental awareness work.
  • A good understanding of waste and recycling practices, with a genuine interest in sustainability.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to work independently across the district.
  • A resilient and positive approach when dealing with challenging conversations.
  • Someone who shares and supports the Council’s values and commitment to excellent customer service.
