One Derbyshire, Two Councils 

 

Consultation - Summer 2025

Local residents, businesses, public sector partners and community and voluntary groups were invited to have their say on our One Derbyshire, Two Councils consultation, which ran from 30 June to 10 August 2025.

Over 7,300 residents participated in the survey, alongside 27 in-person sessions that included hundreds of conversations, and interviewed all our key partners including the NHS, police and local businesses, which provided valuable insights.

The results helped to shape our final 'One Derbyshire, Two Councils’ ^{(pdf, 8.6mb)}case for change proposals.

You can read more on this in our news section. Derbyshire County Council also undertook a public consultation in summer 2025 to inform their proposal.

The Case for Change proposals were heard at all full Council meetings across the Districts, Boroughs and City Council in November 2025, and a submission made to the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) by the 28 November 2025 deadline.

 

The decision

 

On Thursday 16 July 2026, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government announced that from 1 April 2028, South Derbyshire District Council will cease to exist. From that day forward (‘Vesting Day’), the Council will instead form part of a larger Unitary authority, joining together with colleagues from South Derbyshire, Derbyshire, Derby City, Erewash and the southern side of Amber Valley.
