South Derbyshire Residents Recycle a Fantastic 235 Tonnes of Food Waste in First Month! 🍏🔋
South Derbyshire residents have knocked it out of the park during the first month of our new weekly food waste collection service.
Initial data for June reveals that nearly two-thirds of households (65.7%) across the district have actively embraced their new food waste caddies. Together, our community successfully diverted approximately 235 tonnes of food waste from landfill in just 30 days!
Putting Waste to Work ⚡🌱
So, where did all that food waste go?
Instead of heading to a landfill site where it would rot and release harmful greenhouse gases, your recycled food scraps were sent directly to a local Anaerobic Digestion (AD) facility. There, the waste is being safely broken down and transformed into:
-
Renewable energy to help power the National Grid.
-
Nutrient-rich fertiliser used by local farmers to nourish green spaces and crops.
On average, participating households recycled an impressive 7.14kg of food waste over the month - proving that small changes in our kitchens add up to a massive victory for our local environment.
Didn't Take Part in June? It’s Not Too Late! 🤝
We want to say a massive thank you to every single resident who has lined their caddy, scraped their plates, and put their waste out for collection. You are the driving force behind this brilliant milestone.
If you haven't started using your caddy yet, or if you missed a collection, don't worry! It’s easy to start. By recycling your unavoidable food waste - like eggshells, vegetable peelings, tea bags, and plate scrapings - you are directly helping to make South Derbyshire a cleaner, greener place to live.
