Active Schools Partnership

The South Derbyshire Active Schools Partnership is part of the wider Derbyshire Active Schools Network, which includes nine partnerships across the county. Our mission is simple:
To improve the lives of young people through physical education and sport.

We proudly support 32 infant, primary, junior schools and secondary schools, through a wide range of initiatives designed to promote participation, leadership, and excellence in school sport.

Competitions and Festivals

We offer an inclusive school sport calendar for all ages and abilities, giving pupils the chance to attend festivals and compete in a variety of activities.

In the 2025/26 academic year, we’re running an exciting programme of 44 competitions, providing opportunities for schools to:

  • Compete in friendly and challenging environments
  • Collaborate with other schools
  • Celebrate sport and teamwork

These events foster resilience, school pride, and personal growth, encouraging pupils to challenge themselves and enjoy the spirit of sport.

Physical Education and School Sport Support

Schools can access a needs-led programme to enhance the quality of PE teaching. We offer:

  • Bespoke one-to-one guidance for planning and delivery
  • Specialist-led PE sessions delivered by our experienced team

Our goal is to raise the standard of physical education across South Derbyshire.

Bikeability

Bikeability

Bikeability is the government’s national cycle training programme, designed to equip people of all ages with the practical skills and confidence to cycle safely on today’s roads. It’s more than just a training course, it’s a gateway to a lifelong, healthy, and sustainable mode of travel.

The Bikeability Trust aims to activate a nation of cyclists by ensuring everyone has the confidence to enjoy the life skill, independence and fun of cycling.  Giving everyone the competence and confidence to cycle is their core mission, making cycling the norm for short journeys.

Locally, the Active Schools Partnership team supports this mission by delivering Bikeability training in schools through qualified instructors. Training is offered across three progressive levels:

  • Learn to Ride: For children who are new to cycling or need a confidence boost. This often begins with Balanceability, a fun and supportive way to learn the basics.
  • Level 1: Focuses on essential bike-handling skills in a safe, traffic-free environment.
  • Level 2: Prepares children to cycle on minor roads using planned routes, giving them real-world experience and confidence.

Balanceability is the UK’s first and only AfPE (Association for Physical Education) approved and accredited ‘learn to cycle’ programme. It uses specially designed ergonomic balance bikes and a series of engaging activities to help young children learn to ride without the need for stabilisers which builds balance, coordination, and confidence from the start.
