Disposing of your waste responsibly
Did you know that you have a legal responsibility to make sure your household waste is disposed of correctly, even if you pay someone else to take it away?
Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, householders have a duty of care to take reasonable steps to ensure their waste is passed to an authorised person.
If you give your waste to an unauthorised collector and it ends up fly-tipped, you could face a £500 fixed penalty notice for failing to meet your duty of care.
Using a private waste collector?
Before handing over your waste, make sure you:
-
Check they're registered - Ask for their waste carrier registration number and check their details with the Environment Agency.
-
Ask for a receipt - Keep a record of who collected your waste and when.
-
Check where your waste is going - Make sure the collector is disposing of it responsibly.
-
Be cautious of suspiciously cheap offers - Always check that the person or company is authorised before handing over your waste.
You can check whether a company is registered using the Environment Agency's Waste Carriers, Brokers and Dealers Register.
By disposing of your waste responsibly, you can help prevent fly-tipping and keep South Derbyshire clean and safe for everyone.
