Get Active in the Forest
National Forest Walking Festival
The National Forest spans 200 square miles of Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire, linking the ancient forests of Charnwood and Needwood. Within this vibrant treescape, new woodlands, meadows, hedgerows and water, black coalfields and grey clay pits have been transformed into wildlife-rich habitats.
Over three decades, ten million trees have been planted, turning derelict land and spoil heaps into glades, woodlands and thriving habitats. The Forest has revitalised communities, created opportunities for local businesses, encouraged sustainable tourism, and shown how imagination and determination can transform a landscape. It is a place where children learn, families explore, and people connect with nature every day.
To celebrate this asset within our district, there is the popular National Forest Walking Festival, held in May each year, featuring walks for all ages, tastes and abilities. This year the walking festival took place on Friday 15th – Friday 29th May 2026. You can view the walks brochure here .
Get Active in the Forest are a key organiser of this event, working with volunteer walk leaders to create a catalogue of walks for all.
Each year, the walking festival follows a different theme. This year’s theme was Art & Culture, encouraging engagement with sounds, texture & colour and highlighting the ways in which the Forest has shaped communities and local history.
Every walk is graded for difficulty and guided walks are led by an experienced leader with local knowledge. With a wealth of attractions to visit and plenty of places to stay, why not make a break of it?
