Local Housing Allowance

Local Housing Allowance (LHA) is the rent figure used to work out housing benefit for most private tenants.

Your LHA rate is based on the number of bedrooms you are allowed and not on how much your rent is. The number of bedrooms allowed depends on who lives with you.

You can find out how many bedrooms your claim will be based on by using the Directgov Local Housing Allowance Calculator.

You also need to check in which area the property you are claiming for is located. South Derbyshire is split into three parts:

  1. Eastern Staffordshire: includes Hatton, Hilton, Willington, Repton, Swadlincote, Church Gresley, Castle Gresley, Linton and Coton-in-the-Elms.
  2. Derby: includes Etwall, Findern, Ticknall, Melbourne and Stenson Fields
  3. Leicester and surrounds: includes Smisby.

For accurate, up-to-date rates, visit the Directgov website.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) update:
The Government announced that it would review the Local Housing Allowance rates as a financial support following the measures taken in the Coronavirus outbreak. We are currently amending our software to enable us to make this change.  If you currently receive Housing Benefit based on a Local Housing Allowance Rate we will write to you shortly and tell you about your revised rate of Housing Benefit.
